THESIS

Thesis is more theoretical and personal. I was exposed to this word during my A/L in 2008 – 2010, reading a Sinhala socialist magazine which provided a social analysis research paper describing “Populism”. This album is more internalized focusing on personal human emotions and the mind of humans through external photography manipulated through editing to match the title themes of the photos. The word “Thesis” according to Dictionary.com have 2 meanings, 1.       A statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved. 2.       A long essay or dissertation involving personal research, written by a candidate for a university degree.

The title is based on Mein Kampf (German: [maɪ̯n kampf], My Struggle) which is a 1925 autobiographical book by Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler. The work outlines Hitler's political ideology and future plans for Germany. Volume 1 of Mein Kampf was published in 1925 and Volume 2 in 1926.The book was edited by Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess. A definition for “falling” or the word “fall” is (of a person) lose one's balance and collapse. This image or photograph’s meaning is a reflection of heavy depression of a person and his emotional condition is reflected through body language. To arouse his internal struggle heavy editing tools like “negative” effect, “HDR’s” effect, “blur” effect and “Black and White” is used. This is a simple imagery of a human emotional status.

Breaking is an abstract art that reflects on a shattered mirror. It was drawn using 3 colours which are cobalt blue, prussian blue and purple. It was originally conceptualized by me without any references or influences from external parties.

Magnitude, the word according to “Dictionary.com”, is the great size or extent of something. This photograph is a reflection of a person suffering from chronic depression. His facial hair and hair reflects improper nature of his lifestyle and internal mental status. The photograph was edited using “Filtered Black and White”, “HDR-ish”, “1960’s”, “Cross process” tools. It’s a purposely taken close-up photo to give an excessive feel of human suffering through facial  expression to emphasize the meaning of the title.

This image is a real life image of my plans and objectives that I have set to achieve daily using a time table. But hardly I follow them and continue with my work. It is therefore can be considered the title is very strongly embedded to my slacker lifestyle. I have edited this photograph using “heat map imagery” tool, “Orton-ish” effect and “Cross process” tool.

According to Dictionary.com, horizon is the line at which the earth's surface and the sky appear to meet. This photograph is a reflection of the suburban rooftops of Gampaha, Sri Lanka. It is very simply edited and the image processing tool used was “image sharpen”.

This title is another image based on my personal observation as a person on finding ourselves. According to Dictionary.com, the part of something that is central to its existence or character is a definition of the word core. This definition is basically identifying a person’s true identity. Some what this exploration will enable the person to understand and identify his true potential and skills to create a career. But these photographs have reflected a darker image of human condition. According to Dictionary.com, the non-physical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character; the soul is a one definition of the word “spirit”. The image or the photograph is a depiction of a lady walking in a pavement of city of Colombo at night. Since the photograph was taken from a distance the center of the image is the lady. The photo was heavily edited using various techniques like “negative” effect and color balancing to give its haunting imagery. The photo is a reflection of the loneliness of life and its existence through visual imagery.

"What are we ?" is an artwork that is drawn using pencils. HB 50 pencils were used in finalising this artwork. It is an abstraction of the physical objects. It is a reflection of the relationship between humans and materials. Though highly abstracted its a simple image of mixture of art and reality.

According to Dictionary.com, the word “public” means community. Many of my travels to routine tasks were done using public transport. This photograph is a simple reflection of a day to day life observation of any Sri Lankan.

Title – Dreamers won’t last long / සිහිනමවන්නෝ (Amateur photographer / ආරම්භක ඡායාරුපශිල්පියෙක් ) Photographed by Camera – Canon EOS 1100D / Lens – EFS 18 – 55 mm and 75-300 mm Open for ideas and criticism. අදහස් හා උදහස් වලට විවෘතයි . “Dreamers won’t last long” photograph is a combination of three photographs. It was edited using the “Collage” tool of “Google Picasa” and “multiple exposure effect” was given, where this will superimpose pictures over one another. The 3 photographs are close ups of my bedroom walls. Many contain motivational quotes, posters and my goals. Some are achieved and some are not. This is a reflection of the heartbreak and its consequences. The “multiple exposure effect” will provide a superimpose effect where it will create a dreamlike sequence for 3 photographs resembling the title of the final photograph.

Solutions [Marketing] is one picture or image reflecting leading Sri Lankan brands, the image was built using multiple exposure to superimpose logo's each other. Reflection, the word can be defined as an amount of light, heat, or sound that is reflected by a body or surface according to Dictionary.com. This photo is a simple image of reflections of vehicle lights in a window mirror during the night. The image was edited so the reflections in the glass of the window will be more emergent than the other elements in the image. The purpose of this image was to express the beauty of photo editing by manipulating the color balancing. 

"Carried Away" is an abstract art drawn in 2D painted using water colours. It is a reflection of the tree's in the up country. This is just a pure natural observation of mine abstracted. And also in 2007-2010 I attended a Chandragupta Thenuwara : Art Exhibition at Lionel Wendt, Colombo. He drew an art of "camouflage clothing" creating a 3D effect by applying shading, That artistic style has clear impact from it. Chandraguptha Thenuwara was born in 1960, Sri Lanka. This title was based on my personal observation as a person on finding ourselves. Every day before going to work or school we go in front of a mirror and prepare ourselves to the real world. But is it who we want us to be. This photo’s theme is a reflection of the real you and the person the world see’s. The outer and the inner person. The photo is taken by me. I see my mother in the photo. To be honest my mother doesn’t know anything about the theme of the photo. She is a real nice woman.
